An employer must not treat a person less favourably than another because they are associated with a person who has a 'protected characteristic'. This is a type of direct discrimination.
For example, where the employer treats an employee less favourably because the employee cares for an elderly relative this is direct discrimination because of age (the age of the employee’s relative, and not the employee’s age).
The following type of discrimination is also unlawful:
a failure to make reasonable adjustments
